A.J. Pierzynski doesn’t plan on hanging up the spikes this winter.
Pierzynski, who turns 38 in December, would like to continue his career in 2015, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The veteran catcher just wrapped up his 17th season in the majors.
“I want to play, obviously,” Pierzynski told the newspaper. “Physically, I feel good. I still think I can contribute. I don’t know what will be out there, but I want to play.”
Pierzynski signed a one-year, $8.25 million contract with the Red Sox last offseason as Boston looked to fill the spot vacated by Jarrod Saltalamacchia and bridge the gap to catching prospects Christian Vazquez and Blake Swihart. The relationship ended in July when the Red Sox designated Pierzynski for assignment, paving the way for him to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Pierzynski, an All-Star in 2002 and 2006, hit .251 with five homers, 37 RBIs and a .288 on-base percentage in 102 games this season split between Boston and St. Louis.
