Visitor Newcastle United earned an upset, 2-0 win over host Manchester City on Wednesday, knocking the defending champion out of the League Cup (or Capital One Cup) in the fourth round.

Teenage forward Rolando Aarons put Newcastle ahead in the sixth minute with a well-struck goal from a tight angle, and midfielder Moussa Sissoko sealed the win with a 75th-minute goal.

Manchester City had 70 percent of the possession and a 21-9 advantage in shots, but it couldn’t breach Newcastle’s resilient defense.

Newcastle advances to the quarterfinal, while Manchester City is left to digest its first loss in the competition since September 2012.

The pressure on Newcastle manager Alan Pardew could start to ease, following the win over Manchester City. The victory was Newcastle’s third-straight in all competitions. It’s a far cry from where the Magpies were one month ago when fans were calling on the club to fire Pardew. Newcastle started the 2014-15 season disastrously, failing to win any of its first six games in the Premier League campaign.
