mookie betts david ortizThe Boston Red Sox’s 2014 season was disappointing from start to finish.

The Red Sox’s World Series defense ended with a 71-91 record and a last-place finish in the American League East. Boston started off on the wrong foot in April and never got its bearings, ending up in the division’s basement for the second time in three years.

If there was one saving grace, it was the Red Sox’s trade deadline activity. Boston made changes with an eye toward the future rather than standing pat and stumbling toward game No. 162. The Red Sox didn’t drastically improve in the second half, but the organization at least was able to evaluate players who could potentially be part of its 2015 plans.

The Red Sox’s first-half superlatives were difficult to determine amid the team’s struggles. The second-half superlatives weren’t much easier to sort through, though some bright spots emerged. Let’s break down the best and worst of Boston’s very interesting campaign.
