Pierzynski was left off the St. Louis Cardinals’ National League Division Series roster, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis-Post Dispatch. Tony Cruz will serve as Yadier Molina’s backup during the Cardinals’ playoff series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but there had been chatter St. Louis could keep Pierzynski as an extra left-handed bat.

Pierzynski was released by the Boston Red Sox back in July. Boston opted to go with 24-year-old backstop Christian Vazquez amid the team’s struggles, with reports later indicating Pierzysnki didn’t fit in well with his former Red Sox teammates. The 37-year-old hit .254 with a .286 on-base percentage in 72 games with Boston.

The Cardinals signed Pierzynski with Molina sidelined with a thumb injury. Pierzynski, who is in the midst of his 17th major league season, hit .244 with a .295 on-base percentage in 30 games with St. Louis.
