Jerod Mayo hasn’t been placed on season-ending injured reserve by the New England Patriots yet, but we now know the extent of the All-Pro linebacker’s knee injury.
Mayo underwent surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee, CSNNE.com’s Tom E. Curran reported Thursday morning. Curran said Mayo has a six-month recovery period, which puts him on track to participate in Patriots OTAs next spring.
Mayo suffered the injury Sunday during the second quarter of the Patriots’ 37-22 win over the Buffalo Bills. Mayo had to be carted off the field after tackling Bills running back Anthony Dixon.
Mayo suffered the same injury as New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz. It was widely reported after Cruz’s injury that typically players lose a step after recovering from a torn patellar tendon.
Mayo has three years and $30.5 million left on the seven-year contract he signed in 2011.
