The Seattle Seahawks’ decision to trade wide receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets on Friday seemed like a curious one.
Now, as the dust starts to settle and reports start to surface, it’s beginning to make a little more sense.
According to multiple reports, the wide receiver had become more trouble than he was worth during his time in Seattle. The reports indicate Harvin’s temper and behavior eventually became too much to justify keeping him around.
The Seattle Times reported that Harvin and fellow wide receiver Golden Tate — who signed with the Detroit Lions in the offseason — had a physical altercation before the Seahawks’ Super Bowl win over the Denver Broncos. Tate was left with a black eye because of that altercation.
That wasn’t Harvin’s only dispute with a teammate. According to The Times, Harvin got into it with fellow wideout Doug Baldwin in August prior to the team’s final exhibition game. The Times also reported that the final straw came Sunday in the team’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys when Harvin refused to go back into the game in the fourth quarter.
“(Harvin’s) just a time bomb,” a source told The Seattle Times.
Harvin played in just one regular-season game last season — his first with the Seahawks — because of a hip injury. He did play in the Super Bowl and returned a kickoff for a touchdown in Seattle’s blowout win.
He appeared in five games this season, totaling 133 yards on 22 receptions in addition to 92 yards on 11 carries. He’s scored just one touchdown, a 51-yard touchdown run earlier in the season, which should have been called back after replays showed he stepped out of bounds.
