MLS: Sporting KC at New England RevolutionLee Nguyen’s hot streak has earned him the first of what could be multiple prestigious awards.

Nguyen, 28, was named MLS Player of the Month for October on Thursday. The free-scoring Revolution midfielder narrowly topped Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins in fan voting to win the award, according to a club statement.

Nguyen scored five goals in four games in October, helping the Revs go unbeaten (3-0-1) and clinch second place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings.

Nguyen becomes the first Revolution player to win the league’s Player of the Month Award since 2005 (when Clint Dempsey won in April and Taylor Twellman won in September).

Nguyen also is a contender for this season’s MLS MVP award after scoring 18 goals — the most by a midfielder in league history — and registering five assists during the 2014 regular season. He could be on the 2014 MLS Best XI (all-league) team when it is unveiled in December.

Nguyen will lead the Revolution in their journey through the 2014 MLS Cup playoffs, which starts Saturday when they face the Columbus Crew in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
