The future looks bright for Rusney Castillo, but he’ll have to wait a bit before showcasing his talents on the field again.
The 27-year-old Boston Red Sox outfielder will miss the remainder of the Arizona Fall League schedule because of a right thumb contusion, the team announced Thursday. Castillo will not participate in any baseball activities, and his status for winter ball season in Puerto Rico remains in question.
Castillo suffered the injury Oct. 20 after being jammed on a pitch while playing for the Surprise Saguaros. The team’s schedule runs through Nov. 13.
The Cuban defector projects to be a major factor in the Red Sox’s plans going forward after signing a seven-year, $72.5 million contract with the team in late August. Castillo held his own in 10 games in the majors last season, hitting .333 (12-for-36) with two homers, six RBIs and a .928 OPS.
Castillo was batting .278 (10-for-36) with one RBI and 10 runs scored through eight games this fall and recently was named to the Arizona League’s Fall Stars game, scheduled for Saturday in Scottsdale, Ariz.
