The Ottawa Senators are planning a special ceremony prior to Saturday’s game against the New Jersey Devils in light of Wednesday’s tragic events.
According to the Ottawa Sun, the Senators will hold a moment of silence for soldier Nathan Cirillo, who was killed in the shootings in Canada’s capital, before puck drop. The team is also asking fans to show support for the military by wearing red to the game, which will mark the first time Ottawa has played since the attacks at the War Memorial and Parliament Hill.
The Sens’ home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs scheduled for that night was postponed to Nov. 9.
“Our leaders are asking us to move forward with the healing process, and we’re hoping hockey can help in some small way,” Senators president Cyril Leeder said, per the Sun.
In addition, the Senators will work together with the Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens to coordinate a special anthem presentation before the 7 p.m. start times of the respective games. The Leafs are hosting the Boston Bruins, while the Habs are facing the New York Rangers.
“What doesn’t break us, makes us stronger,” Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said in a statement. “Today our country stands more united than ever and so does the entire NHL family. We are very pleased to join forces with the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs in coordinating a unique and special tribute prior to our game on Saturday.”
Leeder added there would be an increased police presence at Saturday’s game, as well as enhanced security measures.
