South African soccer’s biggest show won’t go on this weekend, as the nation mourns the loss of Senzo Meyiwa.
Saturday’s Premier Soccer League (South African first division) game between rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs has been postponed due to the Meyiwa’s tragic death, according to FIFA.com.
“The match will not happen on Saturday out of respect for Senzo. That is the right thing to do,” PSL CEO Brand de Villiers said at a press conference Monday.
Meyiwa was shot and killed by intruders, who broke into his friend’s house near Johannesburg on Sunday evening. He was 27 years old.
Meyiwa was the captain and starting goalkeeper of both Orlando Pirates and South Africa’s national team.
Both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, South Africa’s biggest clubs, agreed to postpone Saturday’s game, which was expected to draw over 90,000 fans to Soweto’s Soccer City Stadium and millions more viewers around the world.

The PSL will announce a new date for the game between league-leader Kaizer Chiefs and sixth-place Orlando Pirates. This weekend’s other PSL games will go ahead as scheduled.
