Both hail from the football hotbed of Aliquippa, Penn., and both solidified themselves as among the best shutdown cornerbacks in the history of the NFL.
On Thursday night, in his first game against the team where he established that reputation, Darrelle Revis will watch Ty Law get inducted into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame at halftime of Thursday night’s game against the New York Jets.
The two also spent time on both sides of the Patriots-Jets rivalry, but in a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Law mentioned that Revis’ latest change of scenery lets him thrive doing what Law used to do best — picking out the opponent’s best receiver and locking him down.
“To see Darrelle doing some of the same things now – that was one of my selling points to him,” Law said. “If you were to come to the Patriots you would have an opportunity to do some of the same things that you did in New York. Somewhat different system, but you will still be in charge of taking out the top guy (in) man or zone, and I think that was one of the things that pushed him to come to New England.
“It’s been a joy to watch him the last few weeks to go out there and be able to do what he does best because he was totally out of place in Tampa Bay,” Law added. “That wasn’t Darrelle Revis; that wasn’t the type of football that he likes to play. Where we’re from in Aliquippa, we called that cat coverage. I’ve got that cat, you got that cat, you got that cat, and that’s what we do.”
You can bet Revis will be more than willing to provide a demonstration against Rex Ryan and the Jets on Thursday night.
