Edmonton Oilers captain Andrew Ference might be in trouble with the NHL.

The NHL Department of Player Safety announced Sunday that Ference will have a hearing for his high hit on Vancouver Canucks forward Zack Kassian during the previous night’s game in Edmonton.

According to the league, Ference’s hit is being reviewed on the grounds of potentially being an illegal check to the head and charging. Kassian was not hurt on the play.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Sunday that Ference will have a phone hearing, which means he can’t be suspended for more than five games.

If Ference is suspended, it would be the third ban of his career. As a Boston Bruin, he was suspended for one game during the 2013 playoffs for a hit on Toronto’s Mikhail Grabovski and received a two-game ban for boarding New York’s Ryan McDonagh in 2012.
