Glen Johnson’s Diving Header Helps Liverpool Beat Stoke City (Video)

Glen Johnson doesn’t score many goals, but his strikes always are dramatic and significant.

Johnson scored the game-winning goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Stoke City on Saturday. The goal, Johnson’s first since December 2012, could not have come at a better time, as Liverpool was facing the prospect of a winless November.

The game was goal-less in the 85th minute when Rickie Lambert headed Jordan Henderson’s pass off the crossbar. Johnson reacted first, charging toward the goal-mouth and beating goalkeeper Asmir Begovic with a diving header.

Johnson, 30, couldn’t celebrate the goal due to a head wound. Stoke City defender Erik Pieters kicked Johnson in the head in an effort to clear the ball from danger. Johnson stayed down on the field for five minutes, and Liverpool’s medical staff had to staple the wound shut.

Johnson undoubtedly will consider the wound a small price to pay for being the hero of the moment. Johnson’s goal gave Liverpool its first win since Oct. 19, ending a frustrating, seven-game win-less streak (in all competitions).
