Patriots-Lions Live: LeGarrette Blount Scores Twice; New England Wins 34-9

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 201410:38am

10:35 a.m.: The New England Patriots truly don’t mess around at the friendly confines of Gillette Stadium.

The Patriots are 5-0 at home this season and 97-18 since the team moved from Foxboro Stadium to Gilllette in 2002.

The Detroit Lions are in town to try to ruin the Patriots’ perfect home record this season. The Lions are in first place in the NFC North and trying to fend off the Green Bay Packers. Both teams have 7-3 records, but the Lions beat the Packers back in Week 3.

The Packers have a much easier matchup this week, traveling to play the Minnesota Vikings before the Patriots travel to Green Bay next week.

The Patriots-Lions matchup also pits Detroit’s Megatron (Calvin Johnson) against New England’s Minitron (Julian Edelman). It’s still unclear how the Patriots will decide to cover Johnson. The Patriots either will let their cornerbacks stick to one side, Darrelle Revis will cover Megatron alone or Brandon Browner will follow Johnson with help from Devin McCourty over the top.

Stay here for updates and analysis throughout the game. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 201412:36pm

12:35 p.m.: The Patriots showed a 4-3 defense during pregame warmups:

DE: Rob Ninkovich, Zach Moore
DT: Vince Wilfork, Chris Jones
LB: Akeem Ayers, Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins
CB: Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner
S: Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Patriots in nickel for most of this game, however, with Kyle Arrington being inserted into the defense for Moore, with Ayers playing defensive end.

First quarter, 15:00: The Patriots won the toss and chose to defer. We’re ready for kickoff here at Gillette Stadium.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:05pm

First quarter, 15:00: The Patriots’ defense opened up with Brandon Browner on Calvin Johnson and Darrelle Revis on Golden Tate.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:10pm

First quarter, 11:44, Lions 3-0: The Patriots bent but didn’t break early here at Gillette Stadium. The Lions took the 3-0 lead on a Matt Prater field goal after Revis had a pass breakup on third and 6.

Revis allowed two catches for 41 yards to Tate earlier in the drive. Lions running back Joique Bell didn’t have much success running the ball early, carrying the ball three times for 9 yards.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:15pm

First quarter, 10:05, Lions 3-0: The Patriots couldn’t get anything going and Ryan Allen had to punt.

The Patriots picked up a first down on third and 3, but right tackle Sebastian Vollmer was called for illegal hands to the face. Allen’s punt went 42 yards, and the Lions have the ball at their own 45-yard line.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:19pm

First quarter, 8:42, Lions 3-0: The Lions followed up a semi-successful drive with a three and out. Akeem Ayers forced the punt with his third sack in four games with the Patriots.

The Pariots have the ball at their own 14-yard line after Danny Amendola decided to field the punt with a Lions player in his face.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:24pm

First quarter, 7:27, Lions 3-0: The Patriots’ offense stays anemic on their second drive.

The series ended with Tom Brady getting absolutely annihilated by Ndamukong Suh on an attempted screen. Suh went unblocked and Brady was on his back before he knew what or whom hit him.

Ryan Allen saved the day with a 66-yard punt, and the Lions have the ball on their own 21-yard line.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:28pm

First quarter, 5:47, Lions 3-0: The Lions’ offensive line might want to start blocking guys. Rob Ninkovich mauled Matthew Stafford on a 9-yard sack while defensive tackle Alan Branch also was in the backfield.

The Lions went three and out and the Patriots have the ball on their own 36.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:35pm

First quarter, 3:10, Patriots 7-3: The Patriots take the lead after a nine-play 64-yard drive.

Tim Wright caught his fifth touchdown pass of the year. He has just 19 catches on the season.

Julian Edelman had a big drive, and Brady found more success on play-action passes to Brandon LaFell. LaFell already has 34 yards on three catches.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:40pm

End first quarter, Patriots 7-3: The Lions were able to pick up a first down as the first quarter wound down after rookie defensive end Zach Moore missed an open-field sack on Lions QB Matthew Stafford. Stafford completed his pass to Johnson for the first down.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:47pm

Second quarter, 13:37, Patriots 7-6: Patrick Chung initially was the goat, then completely redeemed himself on that Lions drive.

Chung committed a costly holding penalty that put the Lions just yards away from the end zone. Then, the safety made a beautiful pass breakup on third down on a Stafford pass to tight end Joseph Fauria.

Darrelle Revis also broke up a a pass into the end zone intended for Calvin Johnson. Safety Devin McCourty made a touchdown-saving tackle earlier in the drive, stopping running back Joique Bell from getting in the end zone.

Prater kicked the short field, and the Patriots still lead 7-6.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:51pm

First quarter, 12:43, Patriots 14-6: Maybe the Patriots should keep Danny Amendola on kick returns and LeGarrette Blount in the backfield.

Amendola’s return went 81 yards as he weaved down the field and around defenders. After a first-down pass to Brandon LaFell, Blount’s first carry back with the Patriots went for a 3-yard touchdown.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20141:59pm

LeGarrette Blount did Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown’s dance after his TD:

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20142:02pm

Second quarter, 7:45, Patriots 14-6: The Patriots’ defense continues to impress. They forced a punt after Revis forced two incompletions on targets to Golden Tate. Ninkovich recorded his second sack of the game earlier in the drive, but it was called back on a holding penalty by linebacker Jamie Collins.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20142:11pm

Second quarter, 2:42, Patriots 21-6: Tim Wright is a machine built to catch touchdown passes from Tom Brady.

The tight end just caught his sixth touchdown on 20 receptions. Wideout Julian Edelman picked up three first downs on that drive. He now has seven catches for 63 yards. Tight end Rob Gronkowski also caught his first pass, a 15-yarder.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20142:23pm

Second quarter, 0:35, Patriots 21-6: After a two-minute drive, kicker Matt Prater’s field goal attempt was no good. The Patriots now have time to put some more points on the board before the half is over. Matthew Stafford targeted Kyle Arrington four times in a row on that series, and the Patriots cornerback held up well.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20142:28pm

End half, Patriots 24-6: It didn’t look like the Patriots were going to score before the half after they were hit with a couple costly penalties, but then the Lions decided to stop covering Rob Gronkowski, and Stephen Gostkowski was able to put three points on the board with a field goal.

Gronk now has three catches for 62 yards on the afternoon.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20142:50pm

Third quarter, 11:57, Patriots 24-6: The Patriots were inside the red zone, and Tom Brady was picked off by former teammate James Ihedigbo. The Lions now have the ball on their own 7-yard line. Brady’s pass was intended for Gronk, who was being interfered with.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20142:59pm

Third quarter, 8:32, Patriots 24-6: The Patriots might have lost their slot cornerback on that series.

Arrington was helped off the field and left for the locker room after taking a helmet-to-helmet shot from teammate Duron Harmon. Arrington was covering Jeremy Ross and Corey Fuller.

The Lions punted, and the Patriots have the ball at their own 25-yard line after Amendola had a 0-yard return.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20143:08pm

Third quarter, 5:05, Patriots 27-6: The Patriots have a comfortable lead as the third quarter is winding down here at Gillette Stadium. Brady missed deep throws to Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell, but the Patriots still were able to kick a field goal to go up three touchdowns on the Lions.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20143:20pm

Third quarter, 2:54, Patriots 27-6: Julian Edelman brought back one of his more ridiculous punt return TDs, but it was all for naught. Chung was flagged for a block in the back, and it was brought back.

The Patriots went three and out, and the Lions have the ball on their own 35.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20143:26pm

End third quarter, Patriots 27-6: The score remains 27-6 after three quarters. Stafford just hit Megatron for a 22-yard diving catch near the sideline, and the Lions are driving.

Darrelle Revis has allowed two catches for 41 yards on 11 targets in coverage this afternoon including a 24-yard screen to Golden Tate.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20143:30pm

Fourth quarter, 14:48, Patriots 27-9: The Lions decided to kick a field goal for some reason. Perhaps to add some points to my fantasy team (I had to pick up Prater this week).

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20143:40pm

Fourth quarter, 13:56, Patriots 27-9: The Patriots went three and out, and the Lions have the ball at their own 31-yard line.

LaFell and Edelman both dropped diving passes on the drive.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20143:50pm

Fourth quarter, 11:25, Patriots 27-9: The Lions finally were driving and looked ready to score, but Matthew Stafford, scrambling on fourth down, slid short of the first-down marker, and the Patriots took over on downs.

Browner was called for pass interference on Calvin Johnson earlier in the series. He also had a great pass breakup on Johnson.

The Patriots take over at their own 16-yard line.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20143:57pm

Fourth quarter, 7:03, Patriots 27-9: The Patriots only were able to pick up two first downs on that drive before Ryan Allen punted away. The Lions have the ball on their own 16-yard line.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20144:02pm

Fourth quarter, 5:40, Patriots 27-9: Logan Ryan picked off Stafford, and that could be all she wrote here in Foxboro.

Running back LeGarrette Blount started the Patriots’ drive with a 33-yard carry.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20144:14pm

Fourth quarter, 1:53, Patriots 34-9: Well, the Patriots have their fourth blowout win in a row, and the Patriots faithful are filtering out of Gillette Stadium.

The Patriots were about to settle for a field goal, but the Lions committed a personal foul, giving New England a first down, and Blount ran it in for his second touchdown of the afternoon.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20144:20pm

Final, Patriots 34-9: LeGarrette Blount probably is pretty happy to be back with the Patriots. He came back and totaled 78 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns. Not bad for a guy who couldn’t find the field with the Steelers.

The Patriots wrap up their ninth win of the season, ensuring another winning season for Bill Belichick and the Patriots.

Check out this week’s stars of the game.

Doug Kyed Sun, Nov 23, 20144:54pm

Prater kicked the short field goal, and the Patriots still lead 7-6.
