Ryan Howard has struggled on the baseball diamond in recent years, and it seems his personal life isn’t going smoothly either.
The Philadelphia Phillies first baseman and his family were involved in a legal dispute regarding control over his finances, according to David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News. The fight apparently included his twin brother suing him for over $2.7 million. Howard counter-sued for fraud and mismanagement of his funds.
The former MVP took his father’s advice and let his family take control of his finances in the early stages of his career. His brother, Corey Howard, did marketing and business work for Ryan and was paid $7,975 every two weeks, the Daily News reports.
According to court documents per the Philadelphia Daily News, “Howard’s brother Corey alleged that he had unjustly terminated a consulting agreement between the two.” Howard’s counter-suit, meanwhile, stated by 2011, “Ryan had become concerned with whether Corey and his other family members were really working to protect his financial interests or were attempting to enrich themselves at his expense.”
The dispute has since been settled for an undisclosed amount of money.
One thing is for sure, though, Thanksgiving dinner will be pretty awkward this year.
