The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers played a back-and-forth game Saturday night, and it featured one of the most bizarre endings you’ll ever see.
The two Metropolitan Division rivals couldn’t settle the game after 60 minutes, entering overtime tied 2-2. The overtime session couldn’t produce a winner, either, so the two teams went to a shootout.
The Rangers appeared to win the shootout when Dan Boyle scored in the third round. The goal was a walk-off winner, as the Rangers celebrated on Pittsburgh ice, feeling good after a hard-earned win against one of the NHL’s best teams. The Penguins left the ice and headed to the locker room the losers.
Or so we all thought.
Replays soon after showed that Boyle’s shot hit the post. The puck then bounced off the post and off of Boyle’s stick again before going into the net. That’s a double-hit, which is illegal. After a few moments, the play was reviewed, as both teams slowly started to trickle back out to the ice. Eventually, the call was overturned and the shootout resumed.
Of course, the Penguins went on to win.
The Rangers were understandably bummed out by how things played out.
“It was very tough to regroup, that’s for sure,” Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist told reporters, according to the New York Post. “As I heard (Boyle) explain what happened, I kind of had a feeling … but it’s extremely frustrating.
“You think you have the two points and are relaxing but then you have to go back. You have everything to lose and they have everything to win … there’s no excuse, obviously, but it’s tough.”
