The Boston Red Sox made a couple of moves Monday and created some space on their 40-man roster.
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington announced that the team outrighted infielder Jonathan Herrera to Triple-A Pawtucket. In addition, the Seattle Mariners claimed infielder Carlos Rivero off waivers.
Herrera was traded to the Red Sox from the Colorado Rockies before the 2014 season for pitcher Franklin Morales and minor-league pitcher Chris Martin. The 30-year-old switch-hitter made 42 appearances for Boston and was batting .233 before being optioned to Pawtucket on July 7. He went down with a season-ending elbow injury after just 13 games with the PawSox.
Herrera becomes a minor-league free agent Monday at 5 p.m.
The 26-year-old Rivero made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in August, playing in four games and going 4-for-7 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs. He split the rest of his season between Pawtucket and the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs.
Monday’s moves leave Boston’s 40-man roster at 36.
