Two more Florida State football players are in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, after a report came out alleging the Tallahassee Police Department mishandled a car accident they were involved in.
According to a New York Times report from Mike McIntire and Walt Bogdanish, starting cornerbacks P.J. Williams and Ronald Darby fled the scene of a car crash that occurred at 2:37 a.m. on Oct. 5, hours after FSU’s 43-3 victory over Wake Forest.
But despite police initially labeling the incident a hit-and-run, Williams was only issued two traffic tickets by Tallahassee police.
The Times reports Williams, who was driving with a suspended license, collided with a car that was driven by “a teenager returning home from a job at the Olive Garden.” Both cars were totaled. Williams, Darby and another unidentified passenger fled, but returned to the scene “approximately” 20 minutes later.
Police reportedly did not test Williams for alcohol, ask if he had been drinking or ask why he left the scene of crash. According to The Times, the officers said in their report Williams wasn’t charged because he eventually did return to the scene “without being contacted by the police.”
University police also arrived at the crash, but the school “dismissed the role of its officers in the incident as too minor to require a report or enter into their own online police log, comparing it to an instance when campus officers responded to a baby possum falling from a tree.”
Williams was ticketed for improper left turn and unknowingly driving with a suspended license.
The 9-0 Seminoles take on Miami on Saturday.
