Reports: Steven Gerrard, Liverpool To Open New Contract Talks This Week

Steven Gerrard Liverpool QPR Steven Gerrard and Liverpool are set to begin urgent talks about the club captain’s future.

Gerrard’s agent, Struan Marshall, and Liverpool officials will begin formal negotiations over a new contract for the 34-year-old midfielder this week, according to the Guardian and Telegraph.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to retain Gerrard, whose current contract expires in June. In a press conference in early November, Rodgers stressed Gerrard’s importance to Liverpool — on and off the field — and said he communicated his feelings to club officials.

Gerrard is a Liverpool icon, having been there since he was 9 years old, played in the first team since he was 18 and captained the club since 2001.

In early November, Gerrard said he would like to remain at Anfield but added that Liverpool will decide whether he stays. He also made it clear that he doesn’t plan to retire after this season.

Gerrard continues to be a key player in Liverpool’s team. He has played every minute of every Premier League game this season and scored two goals and added one assist. He also has scored one goal in four UEFA Champions League games this term.

Gerrard retired from England’s national team after the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He ended his 14-year international career in order to prolong his club career.

Gerrard can listen to offers from foreign clubs starting on Jan 1, 2015. English clubs can speak to him after the season.

Liverpool and Gerrard can prevent both scenarios by agreeing to new terms in the coming weeks.
