File this one under: only in Maine.

Fans of the University of Maine football team attempted Saturday to set the Guinness world record for most fans wearing flannel in one place.

Black Bears supporters needed to be wearing at least two articles of plaid-pattered clothing to qualify — a stipulation the school assisted with by handing out flannel “spirit bands” to the first 1,500 to arrive at Alfond Stadium.

The problem? Only 1,000 fans showed up, according to The Associated Press, just a few shy of the 1,090 needed to break the record.

That wasn’t Maine’s only failure of the day, as it also dropped a 20-12 decision on the gridiron to archrival UNH. The loss ended the Black Bears’ season, while the Wildcats’ victory earned them a No. 1 national ranking and the top seed in the FCS playoffs.
