Craig Breslow will return to the Boston Red Sox on a one-year, $2 million contract, the left-handed reliever’s agent, Bob Baratta, told ESPN Boston on Friday night.
Baratta said the deal is pending a physical. WEEI cited an industry source in first reporting Friday that Breslow and the Red Sox had agreed to terms.
The Red Sox haven’t confirmed any agreement with Breslow, who was choosing between the Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, WEEI reported earlier Friday, citing a major league source.
The Red Sox declined to pick up their one-year, $4 million option on Breslow in October after he had the worst season of his nine-year major league career. He went 2-4 with a 5.96 ERA in 60 games, only one season after he had perhaps his best year, going 5-2 with a 1.81 ERA in 61 games as the Red Sox won the World Series.
Breslow, the most experienced of four possible lefties in Boston’s bullpen, is committed to a bounce-back season.
“I’ve gotten a head start on my workouts, throwing,” Breslow told the Boston Herald earlier this month at David Ortiz’s golf tournament in the Dominican Republic. “I feel strong, I feel healthy. I think 2014, the results were very telling in how important a regular, healthy, normal offseason is for me, maybe moreso than other guys.”
