The University of Nebraska was not happy with Bo Pelini, enough so to fire him as the Cornhuskers’ head football coach on Nov. 30 after seven seasons.
Apparently the feeling is mutual.
In an end-of-year meeting with his players on Dec. 2, Pelini blasted Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst in a profanity-laced rant, according to the Omaha World-Herald, which obtained an audio recording of the meeting.
“A guy like (Eichorst) who has no integrity, he doesn’t even understand what a core value is,” Pelini told his players, via the World-Herald. “And he hasn’t understood it from the day he got here. I saw it when I first met with the guy.
“To have core values means you have to be about something, you have to represent something that is important to you. He’s a f—— lawyer who makes policies. That’s all he’s done since he’s been here: Hire people and make policies to cover his own ass.”
Pelini wasn’t unemployed for long, taking a job at Youngstown State on Dec. 16 under president and former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel. He was introduced as the school’s new head coach Wednesday, and he used the opportunity to take one last shot at Nebraska’s administration.
“I believe that I have a great situation here,” he said, via ESPN.com. “Have a tremendous athletic director, have a president who understands football, who’s going to support me, something that I don’t know if I’ve ever had.”
As you might expect, Nebraska didn’t take kindly to Pelini’s comments, releasing a statement after obtaining a transcript of his meeting with players.
“This behavior is not tolerated at the University of Nebraska and, among many other concerns, played a role in his dismissal,” part of the statement read.
