The head coaching job at Indiana University is one of the most coveted positions in college basketball, but it’s not one Brad Stevens will be pursuing anytime soon.
The Boston Celtics coach — and Zionsville, Ind., native — told SB Nation’s Paul Flannery this week that he has no intention of leaving Causeway Street to return to the college ranks.
“I’ve committed to being here,” Stevens said. “I’ve already left a situation once and that was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to choose to do. This is something that as long as they want me to be here, this is what I want to be doing, and I’m going to give it everything I’ve got. I know it’s all specific to the rumor mills and the discussion of one spot. I think they’ve got a good coach (in Tom Crean) who’s done a helluva job. He doesn’t deserve that speculation.”
It’s no shock that Stevens’ name often comes up in conversations about the Hoosiers gig. He was wildly successful at Butler, after all, and has not enjoyed nearly the same on-court success since making the leap to the pros. But Stevens was adamant in his stance that he is exactly where he wants to be.
“I’m the head coach of the Boston Celtics,” he told Flannery. “This is the job. This is where I am. This is what I want to do really well, and I’m committed to being as good as I can every single day for the Celtics.”
Plus, Crean’s squad actually has been pretty good this season, an embarrassing home loss to Eastern Washington notwithstanding. The Hoosiers boast a 9-2 record and come out of the weekend ranked fourth in the nation in points per game (87.0).
