After a medical work-up and numerous tests, doctors diagnosed Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry with Hodgkin’s lymphoma Monday.
Doctors discovered a mass in Berry’s upper body when he underwent MRI scans recently after complaining of chest pains. The possibility of a cancer diagnosis forced the 25-year-old to miss the rest of the regular season.
The silver lining is that this form of cancer comes with a promising prognosis.
“This is a diagnosis that is very treatable and potentially curable with standard chemotherapy approaches,” Dr. Christopher Flowers of the Emory Lymphoma Program said in a statement, via the Chiefs’ official website. “The goal of Mr. Berry’s treatment is to cure his lymphoma, and we are beginning that treatment now.”
Players and fans have expressed an overwhelming amount of support for Berry over the last few weeks.
“My family and I are very grateful for the amount of support we have received over the last couple of weeks,” Berry said in a statement. “I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate all the words of encouragement, the blessings and well wishes.”
Berry has been named to three Pro Bowls in four-plus seasons with the Chiefs.
