Club World Cup Final Live: Real Madrid Tops San Lorenzo On Sergio Ramos, Gareth Bale Goals

by

Dec 20, 2014

Final, 2-0 Real Madrid: It’s all over at Le Grand Stade de Marrakech. Real Madrid wins the game over San Lorenzo and claims its first-ever Club World Cup title.

It was one-way traffic in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup final, as Real Madrid overpowered San Lorenzo in Morocco. Ramos and Bale scored in each half for the European champions, who were far superior to their South American counterparts from start to finish.

San Lorenzo tried to frustrate Real Madrid into making mistakes, but it didn’t work. Real Madrid kept its cool, stayed patient and scored enough goals to earn a comfortable victory. Real Madrid will take its fourth trophy of 2014 back to Spain, and its 22-game winning streak remains intact.

The goal ended a flurry of attacks by Real Madrid. Kroos passed to Isco, who slotted a pass to Bale inside the San Lorenzo penalty area. Bale shot weakly. Torrico looked like he saved Bale’s effort until it squirmed into the goal.

47th minute, 1-0 Real Madrid: Yepes heads Barrientos’ corner kick wide.

46th minute, 1-0 Real Madrid: The second half of the Club World Cup Final is underway at Le Grand Stade de Marrakech.

Halftime, 1-0 Real Madrid: That’s the end of the first half. Real Madrid leads at the break.

Real Madrid proved it can endure pain (and dole some out) and emerge a stronger force in the first half against San Lorenzo. The European champions dominated possession and territory, dealt with San Lorenzo’s negative tactics and ultimately took a deserved lead through Ramos.

We can’t fault San Lorenzo for their approach. Real Madrid has more quality at every position, and the Argentines decided to defend deep, stay compact and rough up the stars from Spain. It worked until Ramos’ towering header put Real Madrid in front.

Now San Lorenzo will have to do some attacking in the second half — it didn’t register a shot on goal in the first — and open up space at the back for Real Madrid to exploit.

If San Lorenzo is hoping for divine intervention, it won’t come from its most famous fan, Pope Francis.

Kroos was perfect in the first half.

44th minute, 1-0 Real Madrid: Ramos gets on the end of a free kick, but his sliced shot doesn’t trouble Torrico, who saves it.

44th minute, 1-0 Real Madrid: Coentrao replaces Marcelo, as Ancelotti makes an early substitution.

43rd minute, 1-0 Real Madrid: Kanneman fouls Marcelo, injuring the Brazilian fullback.

21st minute, 0-0: Real Madrid still is controlling proceedings, but San Lorenzo is making it hard for the Spanish club to create much in the final third. San Lorenzo’s defense is well-drilled, and its tough-tackling players are ready for fight.

16th minute, 0-0: Barrientos is cautioned, apparently for dissent. The referee ruled that Yepes had fouled Bale near San Lorenzo’s penalty area, sparking furious protests from the Argentinian team.

Fifth minute, 0-0: Ronaldo’s powerful free kick from 35 yards out takes two deflections before reaching Torrico, who collects it.

First minute, 0-0: Real Madrid nearly strikes out of the gate, as Ronaldo gets free in the San Lorenzo penalty area and passes to Benzema at the far post. The French striker was a step slow and couldn’t reach Ronaldo’s cross.

1:15 p.m. ET: A world championship is on the line, as Real Madrid and San Lorenzo play their final game of 2014 Saturday.

Real Madrid and San Lorenzo face off at Le Grand Stade de Marrakech in the final of the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup. Either the Spanish or the Argentinian club will win their first Club World Cup title with a victory and end the year on a high note.

Real Madrid is the strong favorite heading into the game. The reigning king of Europe dispatched Cruz Azul with startling ease on Tuesday, beating the Mexican club 4-0 in the semifinal. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti’s team is on a club-record 21-game winning streak, and the Italian tactician doesn’t intend for it stop in Morocco.

San Lorenzo survived a scare in the semifinal. San Lorenzo needed extra time to defeat New Zealand’s Auckland City 2-1 on Wednesday in the other semifinal. The extra work and one less day of rest are obstacles to San Lorenzo’s pursuit of global glory, but the underdogs have talent, unity and fighting spirit to spare.

Real Madrid-San Lorenzo kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Join us right here for all the action from Le Grand Stade de Marrakech.
