David Ortiz discovered the real reason why Jon Lester chose the Chicago Cubs over the Boston Red Sox during his free agency this offseason.

Well, not really.

The Boston Red Sox slugger sent a tweet to Lester after the southpaw’s introductory news conference Monday, in which he chose his new number. Lester went with No. 34, which Ortiz has worn during all 11 of his seasons with the Red Sox.

Of course, Lester’s decision had nothing to do with Ortiz, but he did put some thought into it, according to Yahoo! Sports. Lester’s usual No. 31 is retired in Chicago, so he selected the new number to honor Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood and legendary Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton, who both wore No. 34 and are beloved in the Windy City. It also pays homage to Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.

This plush doll isn’t New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony (or Anthony Carmelo). It’s Jeremy Lin, who now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Nice try, Walmart.
