It doesn’t matter which team he’s currently suiting up for. Paul Pierce always will be a Boston Celtic at heart.

Doc Rivers is positive of that.

“He is a Celtic for life. Period,” the former Celtics coach, now with the Los Angeles Clippers, told reporters this week, via The Washington Post. “Doesn’t matter where he plays. We tried to sign him. He didn’t play for us. He’s still a Celtic. He’ll always be a Celtic. And that’s exactly what he should be.

“He’s a Celtic playing for other teams. That’s exactly the way I look at Paul. I’ll never look at him as a Wizard. That’s just not going to happen. He’s just a Celtic playing for the Wizards, and we all know that.”

Pierce’s Wizards visit Boston for the only time this season on Sunday, and the Celtics team opposing them has undergone a serious makeover since the 10-time All-Star played his final game in green two seasons ago.

Only five current Celtics had the chance to play alongside Pierce — Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley, Jeff Green, Brandon Bass and Jared Sullinger — but those who did remember him fondly.

“Even a YMCA uniform, he’s still Paul Pierce,” Bradley said Saturday, via the Boston Herald.
