Jets Owner Woody Johnson Clarifies Darrelle Revis Comment: ‘I Misspoke’

It did not take Woody Johnson long to realize his mistake.

The New York Jets owner said Monday that he “would love” to see New England Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis back in a Jets uniform. Johnson’s comments seemed innocent enough, but the folks who enforce the NFL’s tampering policy might disagree.

Apparently aware of this, Johnson clarified his remarks Monday afternoon.

“I misspoke today when I commented on Darrelle Revis,” Johnson said in a statement released though the Jets’ official Twitter account. “I would never interfere in the contractual relationship of a player with another team and should not have used those words. I called (Patriots owner) Robert Kraft (on Monday) afternoon to emphasize those points.”

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addressed the matter in an interview with WEEI, saying he “would think that the league would look into (Johnson’s) comments,” per ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini.
