9:30 a.m. ET: Liverpool’s Premier League campaign could be gathering steam as it nears the festive period.

After struggling in the opening three months of 2014-15, Liverpool is on the cusp of a revival. The Reds have won their last two Premier League games and look to make it three Saturday when they host Sunderland at Anfield.

Liverpool sits eighth in the standings with 20 points after 14 games, while Sunderland is 14th with 14 points from as many games. Three points will help the Reds remain firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish.

More recent trends make Saturday’s contest look promising for the hosts. Liverpool has won back-to-back games. Sunderland is winless in its last four league games and only has won one of its last seven. Liverpool has won its last three games against Sunderland, including both league meetings last season. Sunderland hasn’t won at Anfield since 1983.

Brendan Rodgers has opted for steel over style as he attempts to improve the Reds’ results, and the Liverpool boss is expected to continue with the likes of veterans Lucas Leiva, Kolo Toure and Rickie Lambert in the starting 11.

Saturday’s game represents a reunion of sorts. Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet came to Anfield from Sunderland in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Liverpool forward Fabio Borini spent last season on loan with the Mackems.
