When David Wright heard about the sons of slain NYPD officer Rafael Ramos, he felt obligated to do something.

The New York Mets captain is the son of a cop himself, so on Christmas Eve, he called Jaden and Justin Ramos, who lost their father when he and another officer were murdered in Brooklyn on Saturday. Wright had a 15-minute conversation with the boys and offered them a chance to hang out with the Mets during a spring training game in Florida, per the New York Daily News.

“You should have seen them — what a reaction,” said a police source said. “They were really smiling. It gave them a few minutes to smile and be excited.”

Wright declined to talk to the Daily News about the phone call, but he has spoken about his respect for his own father in the past.

“My dad is my hero,” Wright told the newspaper in May. “He raised four kids on a cop’s salary but never told us the details of his job, about crashing down doors of drug houses and arresting bad guys with guns. If he had, I probably would have had a lot of sleepless nights.”

This is the second gift that the Ramos boys have received from someone in Major League Baseball. On Sunday, the New York Yankees announced that they would pay for Justin and Jaden’s education.
