Michael Phelps hopes he’s turned over a new leaf.

The legendary Olympic swimmer pleaded guilty Friday to DUI charges stemming from a Sept. 30 arrest in Maryland. Phelps was sentenced to 18 months of supervised probation and the judge ordered him to abstain from alcohol over that time.

Phelps, who entered a six-week treatment program after the arrest, also will attend weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings as part of his sentencing.

With sentencing behind him, Phelps issued a statement in a series of tweets Friday.

Phelps, who has won an Olympic-record 18 gold medals, still is expected to come out of retirement and swim at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. He’s currently serving a six-month suspension from USA Swimming, but that is slated to end in March.
