Michigan has a long, storied history of winning football games. Brady Hoke hasn’t upheld that tradition recently, and now he’s out of a job.
Michigan interim athletic director Jim Hackett announced Tuesday that the school has fired Hoke as head coach of the Wolverines. According to Hackett, the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
“I believe that Brady had enough time to produce results, and they’re just not there today,” Hackett said, via the Associated Press. “Therefore I believe it’s time to make this transition.”
Hoke compiled a 31-20 record over four seasons in Ann Arbor. After landing the Michigan job in 2011, he led the Wolverines to an 11-2 record and a Sugar Bowl victory over Virginia Tech in his first year.
Yet that season would prove to be the high point for Hoke, whose teams declined each year, culminating in 2014’s disastrous 5-7 campaign, which was Michigan’s first losing season since 2009.
“I want to thank all of the sons that played for our teams and appreciate the commitment that our coaches and support staff made to the program every day,” Hoke said in a statement. “I will miss the relationships that I’ve been fortunate enough to make within this university and community.”
Hoke’s final game with the Wolverines came in a 42-28 loss to rival Ohio State on Saturday. Michigan is 1-10 in its last 11 games against the Buckeyes and hasn’t won a Big Ten championship since 2004.
