The New York Yankees are making a nice gesture to help out in an awful situation.

The Yankees will pay for the education of the children of New York Police Department Rafael Ramos, according to the New York Daily News. Ramos was one of the two NYPD officers shot and killed Saturday in Brooklyn.

The Yankee Silver Shield Foundation, started by late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, was set up to provide funds for the education of children of fallen New York police officers, firefighters and Port Authority employees.

Ramos has two sons, one of whom already is in college. The other is 13 years old.

Jets center Nick Mangold paid tribute of his own Sunday when he wore a NYPD hat to the stadium before the game against the New England Patriots.
