It’s not even Christmas in the first season of Carmelo Anthony’s five-year, $124 million contract with the New York Knicks, and he’s reportedly already willing to move his holiday elsewhere.
The star forward would consider waiving his no-trade clause if Knicks president Phil Jackson dealt him to another team he would be inclined to play for, the New York Post reported Friday, citing unnamed sources.
Anthony doesn’t exactly want to be traded — yet. But there’s no doubt the Knicks’ current 10-game losing streak and their 4-20 start has made him willing to give up the no-trade clause.
The seven-time All-Star has a 15 percent trade kicker that the acquiring team would have to pay to him. This, along with Anthony’s sore left knee, might decrease his trade value if the Knicks do opt to make a deal.
Anthony is averaging 22.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season, but he has been criticized by Jackson for his lack of defensive energy.
