Report: Celtics, Lakers Had Brief Discussion About Rajon Rondo Trade

Rajon Rondo and Kobe Bryant could have shared breakfast every day.

The breakfast Rondo and Bryant enjoyed together Thursday in Boston had been planned for weeks, sources told ESPN.com’s Ramona Shelburne. However, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers did have a brief discussion about a Rondo trade a few months ago, according to Shelburne.

It’s unclear which team initiated the call or whether the talks ever gained traction. According to Shelburne, sources stressed that the Celtics prefer to re-sign Rondo, who is set to hit free agency after this season. Boston’s willingness to engage in trade talks involving Rondo reportedly is informational at this point.

The C’s likely would ask for at least one first-round pick in exchange for Rondo, sources told Shelburne.

Nevertheless, Rondo’s long-term future remains a mystery. The Celtics could lock up the talented point guard and look to build around him. It’s also possible he could test the open market, and sources told Shelburne that Rondo is high on the Lakers’ list of free-agent targets this summer.

So, was there more to Thursday’s breakfast than meets the eye? Probably not. There’s a mutual respect between the two players and it’s entirely possible they just wanted to catch up while Bryant was in town.

But breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It shouldn’t be taken lightly.
