David Ross is joining his old batterymate.
FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported Friday that the veteran catcher agreed to a two-year, $5 million contract with the Chicago Cubs, joining his former Boston Red Sox teammate Jon Lester. The Red Sox, along with the San Diego Padres, also extended an offer to Ross.
Ross, who turns 38 in March, didn’t give the Red Sox much pop at the plate over the past two seasons, but he proved to be a huge asset behind it. He boasted a 41 percent caught stealing percentage as Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s backup in 2013 and brought out the best in Lester, who performed better with Ross as his backstop.
The Cubs acquired another former Red Sox catcher Friday, too. The team announced that they claimed Ryan Lavarnway off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
