The Jon Lester saga just became even more interesting.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have serious interest in Lester, multiple sources connected to teams interested in the left-hander told WEEI.com. The Dodgers reportedly have the resources to make a strong push for Lester.
One industry source told WEEI.com that he/she was under the impression the Dodgers already made an offer to Lester, though the nature of the offer is unclear.
This obviously is a huge twist in the plot, as the Dodgers certainly aren’t shy about spending money. Los Angeles already owes $225 million to 24 players, including estimates for seven arbitration-eligible players, meaning the Dodgers’ 2015 payroll could exceed $250 million if the club acquires Lester, according to MLB.com’s Phil Rogers.
The Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants are believed to be the most serious suitors for Lester. The Cubs recently offered Lester a six-year, $138 million contract, while the Red Sox are believed to have made a six-year, $130 million offer, according to CBSSports.com.
The Dodgers already have a nasty rotation spearheaded by back-to-back National League Cy Young Clayton Kershaw and fellow ace Zack Greinke. However, a major league source told MLBDailyDish.com’s Chris Cotillo that the Dodgers could shop Greinke due to a growing concern within the organization that the right-hander could opt out of his contract after the 2015 season.
