Jon Lester’s decision is coming soon — or so it certainly seems.
The free-agent pitcher is figured to be the most important domino to fall at the winter meetings, and he’s reportedly expected to make his final decision at some point Tuesday. When he does, he won’t necessarily be taking the biggest offer.
FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday morning that Lester has four contract offers on the table, and they’re all in a six-year, $150 million range. The four teams involved are the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Rosenthal also reported that one team already has indicated a willingness to go into the seven-year, $175 million range, but that might not be a deal-breaker. According to Rosenthal’s report, the Giants and Cubs were the favorites as of Monday night, but no team has been told they’re out of the running.
Lester has said all along that he won’t necessarily take the biggest contract. The left-hander said in August that huge contract offers wouldn’t “make or break” his decision in free agency.
Hopefully we soon find out if that’s truly the case.
