Max Scherzer wants to make bank, bro.
Scherzer is seeking a contract worth more than $200 million, according to FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi. Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is the only pitcher in Major League Baseball history to earn a contract worth as much.
Scherzer, who has spent the last five seasons with the Detroit Tigers, reportedly rejected a six-year, $144 million contract extension during spring training. The right-hander went 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 252 strikeouts in 33 starts spanning 220 1/3 innings this season. He won American League Cy Young Award in 2013.
Scherzer is one of the best pitchers in baseball. It’ll be interesting to see whether the Tigers meet the 30-year-old’s financial demands, though. Detroit already owes Justin Verlander $140 million over the next five seasons.
Scherzer’s market is expected to take shape once Jon Lester makes his free agency decision. Lester was believed to be choosing between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs as of Tuesday night.
