Rex Ryan’s tenure with New York Jets could be over shortly, and apparently no one knows this better than Rex Ryan.
The Jets’ head coach reportedly cleaned out his office at the team’s headquarters, and New York is actively looking for replacements for both Ryan and general manager John Idzik, two sources told NJ.com late Friday night.
Ryan was expected to be on the hot seat following the Jets’ final game of the season Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. He has failed to lead New York to a winning record for the fourth straight season, and if the Jets lose Sunday, their three-win campaign would be the team’s worst season since 1996.
Apparently Jets owner Woody Johnson finally had enough, hiring former NFL executive Charley Casserly as a consultant to reach out to candidates for head coach and general manager, according to NJ.com. Ryan has not been directly contacted by the Jets about his future but began packing his things after learning that Casserly was reaching out to potential replacements, NJ.com reports.
Ryan’s next step remains in question, but fans’ displeasure with Idzik has been no secret. A group of friends started the much-publicized “Fire John Idzik” movement in late October, which has led to billboards, plane banners, Twitter hashtags and more, all calling for the removal of the Jets’ GM.
Idzik, who has been with the Jets for less than two years, was responsible for trading cornerback Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and selecting Geno Smith with the 39th overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft.
