The Boston Red Sox weren’t kidding when they said they were going to add pitching this offseason.
The Red Sox have an agreement in place with Justin Masterson, ESPN’s Buster Olney first reported Thursday. The free-agent right-hander received a contract offer — reported to be for one year — from Boston on Monday. The Texas Rangers also offered him a contract, while he drew interest from a number of teams.
The 28-year-old, who began his career with the Red Sox in 2008, is coming off a disappointing 2014 campaign. Masterson went went 7-9 with a 5.88 ERA in 28 appearances between the Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals.
Masterson is just the latest arm to be added to the Red Sox roster in the last 12 hours, as Boston has reportedly acquired Wade Miley from the Arizona Diamondbacks via trade as well as Rick Porcello from the Detroit Tigers.
UPDATE (12:20 p.m.): Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY reports Masterson’s one-year deal is worth $9 million.
