The Boston Celtics’ season to date has involved a bit of Dr. Jekyll and a lot of Mr. Hyde.
The Celtics’ young squad has shown flashes of promise to start the 2014-15 season. Boston entered Tuesday night’s game averaging 103.4 points per game, good for 10th in the NBA, and ranks second in the league with 25 assists per game.
Yet those numbers haven’t translated into wins, as the C’s are 4-11 after Tuesday’s loss to the Atlanta Hawks and have lost eight of their last nine contests, their only victory coming against the winless Philadelphia 76ers.
A big reason for Boston’s struggles has been its defense, as head coach Brad Stevens’ squad allows 107.6 points per game, 28th in the NBA. The Celtics also have struggled in the fourth quarter, entering Tuesday’s contest with the league’s worst scoring margin in the game’s final frame.
The team’s star player could also be to blame. Rajon Rondo has scored a total of 14 points in his last four games and has shown a lack of consistency this season. Boston’s big men also have struggled to protect the rim, ranking 25th in the NBA with just 3.9 blocks per game.
