An improbable comeback for Alex Rodriguez requires an improbable mentor.

The New York Yankees slugger needs all the help he can get while preparing to return to the diamond after missing the 2014 season while serving his Biogenesis PED scandal suspension, so he’s bringing in the big guns. A-Rod has enlisted the help of San Francisco Giants legend Barry Bonds.

Insert obvious steroid joke here.

According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Rodriguez is training with the all-time MLB home run leader. The two have been spotted together at Future Prospects, a Bay Area baseball facility owned by Bonds’ friend and former Arizona State teammate Charles Scott, Shea reported.

Spokesman Ron Berkowitz confirmed to ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand on Wednesday that Rodriguez has met with Bonds “multiple times to get hitting tips.” Rodriguez also trained with former Seattle Mariners teammate Edgar Martinez in Miami last week, Berkowitz told Marchand.

Shea noted that Bonds tutored Giants hitters such as Michael Morse, Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Crawford during spring training last season, so life isn’t bad for his mentees.

Rodriguez, who will turn 40 in July, is owed $64 million from the Yankees over the next three seasons.
