Johnny Gaudreau is doing all he can to prove his critics wrong.

The Calgary Flames forward on Friday was named the NHL’s rookie of the month for December, the latest accomplishment in an already impressive career.

The Boston College product — whom many believed might be too small to be a legitimate NHL contributor — has been tremendous in his first full pro season. The 2011 fourth-round draft pick took his play to another level in December, netting eight goals — including his first career hat trick — and adding five assists for a 13-point month. Gaudreau also was a plus-12 in 14 games.

The 21-year-old might be playing himself into the Calder Trophy discussion for the NHL’s rookie of the year, as he now has 12-18-30 totals for the Flames.
