BOSTON — There’s a chance the Celtics could be without their starting point guard Friday when the Chicago Bulls visit TD Garden.
Evan Turner was spotted in the locker room Wednesday night with an ice pack and a large wrap on his right hand after Boston’s 105-91 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
Turner told CSNNE.com’s Jimmy Toscano that he injured his thumb during the first quarter after getting it caught in the jersey of Hawks forward Demarre Carroll. He’ll have the thumb examined by team doctors Thursday morning, he told Toscano.
Turner, who has started the last nine contests at point guard for the Celtics, remained in the game despite the injury, ultimately finishing with three points, six assists and four rebounds in 27 minutes of action.
Losing him for Friday’s game and any thereafter would be bad news for the Celtics, who really do not have players to spare. Boston dressed all 12 of its available bodies Wednesday night, as the three players rounding out the roster (Tayshaun Prince, Nate Robinson and Austin Rivers) are expected to be bought out or traded before they ever play a game for the Celtics.
If Turner cannot go against Chicago, Marcus Smart likely will replace him in the starting lineup.
