Merrimack opened up a two-goal lead Friday night and left the rest up to Rasmus Tirronen. It’s safe to say he was up to the task.

The senior goaltender notched an unreal 51 saves to help the No. 19 Warriors (14-8-3) hold on for a 2-1 win over No. 10 UMass Lowell (15-8-3) at Lawler Rink.

Things looked good early on for Merrimack, as forward Chris LeBlanc got the home team on the board with a goal less than four minutes into the first period. They looked even better when Warriors defenseman Marc Biega lit the lamp at the 13:42 mark of the second to double the advantage.

Then came the River Hawk onslaught.

UMass-Lowell pelted Tirronen with 40 shots over the final two frames and narrowed Merrimack’s lead to one with a goal from forward Adam Chapie with less than five minutes remaining. Yet Tirronen withstood the barrage to help the Warriors snap a three-game winless streak.

The River Hawks will hope to solve Tirronen when the two teams square off again Saturday night at the Tsongas Center.
