Hope Solo Assault Charges Dismissed, Ending Domestic Violence Case

Hope Solo’s legal troubles are fading away at the right time.

Kirkland, Wash., Municipal Court Judge Michael Lambo dismissed assault charges against Solo on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

Solo was arrested on June 21, 2014, after a fight at her house during which the U.S. women’s national team goalkeeper allegedly struck her half-sister and 17-year-old nephew. Prosecutors charged Solo with two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence, but Lambo dismissed the charges because witnesses and victims were uncooperative.

The U.S. Soccer Federation faced heavy criticism in October when it included Solo on the American roster for the final round of 2015 World Cup qualifying. Many called on the U.S. women’s national team to omit Solo, whose 73 career shutouts stand as an international record, until her domestic violence case was resolved.

Solo is expected to be the United States’ starting goalkeeper at the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada. Solo didn’t attend Tuesday’s hearing because she was participating in a national-team training camp ahead of this summer’s tournament.

The United States will open its tournament against Australia on June 8 in Winnipeg. The United States then will face Sweden on June 12 in Winnipeg. Team USA then will travel west, where it will take on Nigeria in Vancouver on June 16.
