Peyton Manning’s future has never been more uncertain.

The Denver Broncos announced Monday that they “have mutually agreed to part ways” with head coach John Fox. The news came the day after the Broncos were upset by the Indianapolis Colts 24-13 in their divisional-round matchup.

“On behalf of the Broncos, I sincerely thank John for his many contributions during his four seasons as head coach,” Broncos general manager John Elway said in a statement released by the team. “He helped establish a positive, winning culture for this team and deserves a lot of credit for the Broncos’ turnaround.

“While we have made significant progress under Coach Fox, there is still work to be done. I believe this change at the head coaching position will be in the best interest of our long-term goal, which from day one has been to win World Championships.”

Fox was 46-18 in the regular season and led the Broncos to four consecutive AFC West titles in his four seasons as head coach. Denver was 3-4 in the playoffs under Fox.

“Although we came up short of our ultimate goal, I am proud of our team’s many accomplishments during these last four years,” Fox said in the team-released statement. “I truly appreciate all of the hard work put in by every player, coach and staff member within this organization.”

Added Fox: “I am eager to continue my coaching career and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Now it remains to be seen if Manning, who’ll be 39 next season, will want to stick around. With Fox gone — and possibly more firings to come — the quarterback might not want to finish the final two years of his contract under a new system.

Manning said after Sunday’s loss that he hasn’t ruled out retirement.
