MASHANTUCKET, Conn. — Be patient, hockey fans.
While the Boston Red Sox won’t host the 2016 Winter Classic — the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens reportedly will play at Gillette Stadium — the organization is open to having another NHL game at Fenway Park in the future, according to team president and CEO Larry Lucchino. Fenway, of course, was home to the 2010 Winter Classic, which pitted the B’s against the Philadelphia Flyers.
“I would say that because we have had it once and it hasn’t been at Gillette, it probably was a fairly easy decision for the NHL to make,” Lucchino said Friday at the Red Sox Town Hall event at Foxwoods Resort Casino. “We loved having it, we thought it was very successful. And will we make an effort to get it again in the future? Sure, we will.
“But we hope that the one at Gillette is a very successful thing because Boston, New England, hockey; they all go together so well. We intend to have future hockey events at Fenway, but not in 2016.”
Fenway Park has hosted several hockey events in recent years, including Frozen Fenway, which features collegiate action. The ballpark even will host a Boston College-Notre Dame football game in November.
NESN will air coverage of the Baseball Winter Weekend on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
NESN will air this year’s Red Sox Town Hall on Sunday at 7 p.m.
