Liverpool-Chelsea Live: Branislav Ivanovic’s Extra-Time Goal Eliminates Reds

by

Jan 27, 2015

Final, 1-0 Chelsea after extra time (Chelsea wins 2-1 on aggregate): The referee blows the final whistle. Chelsea defeats Liverpool and advances to the final of the Capital One Cup.

The Reds gave it their all during the pulsating semifinal, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to pass by the Blues. Ivanovic’s goal was the difference in the game and the series, as Chelsea edged past Liverpool in a tight and fiery game at Stamford Bridge. The loss ends the Reds’ hopes of winning the competition for the 19th time in its history. Rodgers won’t be able to win his first trophy as Liverpool manager until May at the earliest.

Fourth minute, 0-0: The game has started quickly and evenly, as neither team intends to give the opponent an early advantage.

Kickoff: The Capital One Cup semifinal between Liverpool and Chelsea is underway at Stamford Bridge.

Pregame: Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho both celebrated birthdays Monday. The managers have picked strong teams, having passed the 42- and 52-year mark, respectively.

Rodgers recalls Skrtel, Moreno, Markovic, Lucas and Gerrard to the starting lineup, as the Reds try to replicate the vintage performance they delivered in the first leg.

Liverpool’s defense has grown increasingly miserly since Rodgers began employing a three-back system in December, especially away from Anfield.

Chelsea’s big team news comes at the back, as Zouma starts ahead of Cahill as Terry’s partner in central defense. The Frenchman might be able to cope with Sterling’s speed better than Cahill can. Zouma joined Chelsea last summer in a £12 million ($18 million) transfer from French club St. Etienne. Zouma, 20, faces the biggest test of his nascent Chelsea career.

Costa also starts. The Brazil-born Spanish international has scored 17 goals in the Premier League this term, but he has yet to score in seven cup games for the Blues.

Liverpool has failed to beat Chelsea in six attempts under Rodgers, who assured the public that the Reds will play without fear at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho still has his eye on winning a treble in his second season in his second stint as Chelsea manager.

12:15 p.m. ET: Liverpool is one game away from its 12th Football League Cup final. Chelsea is trying to prevent the Reds from reaching that dozen mark.

Liverpool and Chelsea meet Tuesday at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of their Capital One Cup (or Football League Cup) semifinal. The outcome of the two-game series hangs in the balance, as the teams enter contest tied 1-1 on aggregate following last week’s first leg draw at Anfield.

Liverpool either needs to win the game or draw it (scoring two or more goals) in order to progress to the final. Manager Brendan Rodgers likely will field his strongest lineup for the decisive game, having rested several regulars Saturday in the draw against Bolton. Rodgers is expected to include Steven Gerrard in the starting 11. The Liverpool captain has never scored at Stamford Bridge (in 15 games). Gerrard and the other Reds will have to perform at their scintillating best when they visit England’s top team.

Chelsea still is smarting from Saturday’s shock defeat against Bradford City in the FA Cup. At this time last week, many were wondering whether Chelsea could win a historic quadruple in 2014-15. If the Blues fall against Liverpool, they’ll only be left standing in two competitions. Such is the speed with which things can change in top-level soccer.

Liverpool-Chelsea kicks off at 2:45 p.m. Join us right here for all the action from Stamford Bridge.
